Women (12 years and older) have found using Vaniqa, a prescription cream, reduces unwanted facial hair and helps with hirsutism (excessive facial hair), a common problem for women of all ages, race and ethnic backgrounds. Like any method of hair removal, Vaniqa doesn’t work for everyone—58% of women in clinical trials had improvement and 42% showed no improvement. Vaniqa is most effective for Caucasians and African Americans. In order to get Vaniqa, you need a prescription from your doctor and insurance generally doesn’t cover it. Vaniqa works by retarding hair growth, but doesn’t remove hairs that are currently present. Patients more than likely will need to continue using another hair removal along with Vaniqa. It can take two months before you can see obvious results from using Vaniqa. If you discontinue using it, all your hair could resurface within two months after stopping. Vaniqa is used like a daily moisturizer and less than 1% of women have any side effects from it. Side effects include redness and bumps. Additionally, Vaniqa can’t be used by men, pregnant or nursing women and women under 12. It can only be used on the face and chin, but NOT in your eyes, nose or mouth. You also can’t use it if you have severe acne or broken skin.
