This is one process you can’t do at home, unless your practitioner makes house calls or you have a friend or family member that can perform this process. Threading (or khite) is interesting to watch—the practitioner holds one end of a piece of cotton thread in their teeth and the other end with their left hand. The middle of the thread is looped through the index and middle fingers of the practitioner’s right hand. The loop does the trapping of unwanted hairs and pulls them from the skin. This process originated in India and is gaining popularity in the West because it doesn’t involve chemicals, is fast, neat and less painful than plucking, is excellent for eyebrows and facial hair and is long lasting (from two to four weeks). Also threading is inexpensive and will only run you on the average $5 for eyebrows, but more for larger areas. However, it can be hard to find a practitioner who does this service outside of large cities or predominantly Indian neighborhoods. Threading can also be painful, cause you to itch after the treatment, and give you potential side effects like bacterial infections in your hair follicles, reddening or puffiness of the skin and changes in skin color or pigment.
