Photoepilators work via controlled flashes of light that are aimed at one hair at a time, which is then tweezed. A hand-held fiber optic probe is placed in or directly above a follicle—a light-based energy is sent through the probe and goes into the follicle. This action is supposed to cause permanent damage to the hair follicle (a type of burning), preventing re-growth of hair. This can be compared to exposing an object to the sun, absorbing light and solar energy. The result is long-term depilation. Some patients say the photoepilators are less painful and there are less side effects than tweezing. It is also considered a safe process, if the practitioner performs it properly. On the downside, this process is expensive and slow. On a research standpoint, there is no proof that this lasts longer than just tweezing and there’s no evidence of long-term effectiveness.
