Hair Removal Methods - Flashlamp

The Flashlamp (or intense pulled light) process is not as widely used as some of the other hair removal processes. But, consumers have been able to achieve permanent hair reduction by using it. The process is similar to lasers and can be expensive. Full-spectrum light and low-range radiation is filtered to allow a range of wavelengths. The filtered light is delivered from a hand-held device onto the skin and target darker materials like pigments in hair. Like electrolysis, it only damages the hair follicle, not the surrounding areas. Unlike lasers, flashlamps use many wavelengths of light and emit a beam that covers more area. The advantages of using a flashlamp include some patients reporting long-lasting hair removal, it’s considered safe (when used properly) and is great for large areas like backs and legs. Additionally if your hair does come back, it regrows lighter in color or finer in texture. Lighter-skinned individuals with dark hair have the best results with this process. People with red or blonde hair haven’t had the best results with the flashlamp. Patients with darker skin tones or who tan should use caution when considering this process. Additionally, some people don’t respond to treatment or find it painful. If improperly done, it can cause skin discoloration and patchy regrowth. Therefore, it is important to have this process performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner.  Lasers seem to be the best solution for permanent hair removal, but you need to do your research before you chose a specific method based on your hair and skin pigment—some methods are more effective and others might not work at all for you.
