The process is quite advanced—a thin metal-like probe is slid into your hair follicle(s) and gets a burst of electricity, which damages areas that generate hairs and doesn’t allow the follicles to grow hair, yet doesn’t puncture the skin. If performed correctly, this is a permanent hair removal process. Electrolysis (also known as electrology) has a good track record, is generally safe and can leave you hair-free (and worry-free) for life. It can, however be expensive, but don’t go for the cheapest rate—make sure your practitioner is licensed/certified (although regulation varies from state to state) and has a good reputation (check boards and other rating methods for recommendations and professionals to steer clear of). Other drawbacks are it can be painful and difficult to remove large amounts of hair (this can result in multiple visits). If done incorrectly, you can either partially or completely regrow your hair, get skin damage and/or obtain an infection. Also, some people do not respond to treatment—this means the process might not work at all for them. Laser hair removal has been electrolysis’ biggest competitor since the 1990s.
