As laser hair removal is becoming an increasingly sought after procedure, clarification about the process is something many are looking for before making a decision. If you’ve been researching treatment, you’ve probably found out that it is a process, but the smooth skin results are permanent. Treatments are spread out through a course duration of 6-8 months, with weeks between each appointment. This is due to the hair growth cycle, which is very important in making the most out of each session.
Hair growth happens in a three-stage cycle. The first is the anagen phase. This is the active stage of hair growth. The bulb of a hair follicle is full of melanin, which is the pigment coloration of hair. Laser treatments are most effective on darker and course hair, making the anagen phase the best stage for treatment, as the hair will be its darkest. The duration of this phase depends on your genetics and how your hair grows, and is different for everyone. The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin, and ultimately destroys the follicle bulb from growing back.
The next phase a follicle goes through is the catagen phase. During this stage, the lower part of the follicle stops growing, but is not yet ready to fall out. The follicle is retained for approximately two to three more weeks, until it enters the final phase called telogen. The hair falls out in this stage, leaving the opportunity for new hair to grow.
Since all of your hair won’t be growing in the same stages, appointments are aimed at targeting new hair growth in the optimum phase. This is why laser hair removal takes a series of appointments, but will give you the best results possible. Expect your sessions to have around 4-6 weeks between each other.
The frequency of your appointments will depend on the area size you’re targeting, and whether or not you’re seeking complete hair removal. Skin tone and hair texture can also be factors when determining the best treatment for you. Your technician should be able to give you an estimation before you begin your treatment, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Be sure to ask about after care at your first session, though you can always follow up with your facility should any questions arise.
