Knowing Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type Before Going to the Spa

When researching the process of laser hair removal, you’ve probably come across the term “Fitzpatrick skin type.” This is a scale used as a baseline to determine which treatment types will yield the best results for varying skin types. In general, the scale was created to determine how different skin types will be affected by UV light.

Type I and type II is pale skin with fair hair. Reds and blondes, unfortunately, have the most difficult time in utilizing laser treatment most. However, don’t be discouraged—look for a technician with experience with similar skin tones.

Type III is creamy white skin with any hair color, usually darker tones. This is one of the most common scenarios, and is also the best situation for laser treatment. Results are most positive for these individuals.

Type IV is dark brown skin, similar to Mediterranean and Latin American typical skin tones, along with darker hair. People who fall in to this category are also considered to be good candidates for laser hair treatments.

Type V is dark brown skin, similar to East Indian people and those from the Middle east. Results are somewhat of a mixed bag, and depend largely on how coarse your hair is, as a coarser texture yields better results.

Type VI is black skin, and can also have mixed results for laser hair removal. Great results are possible, just be sure your technician has experience working with your skin tone and is aware of which specific laser to use.

The best candidates for laser removal are light skinned with dark, coarse hair. Unfortunately, that doesn't apply to everyone, but favorable results can still be achieved. Your facility will help you determine your level on the Fitzpatrick Scale, though it doesn't hurt to have somewhat of an idea before going in.
